Something Wicked This Way Comes を読んでいる。当然の事ながら、The October Country や The Illustrated Man と似たような雰囲気であり、出てくる語も重なる事が多い。カーニバルの不気味な関係者はいつも Octoberにこの地にやってくる。彼らは the Autumn People と呼ばれている。異界の住民たちが秋になるとやってくる。秋は異界の住人たちを呼び寄せる季節なのか？
英語では、illustrated は Tattooed と同じ意味なのか？The Illustrated Man の訳が「刺青の男」となって売れているので、同じ意味と考えてしまうが、これは必ずしも正しくはないだろう。no.2581で次のような会話がある。”The Illustrated Man, if he – ” “The what?” asked Mr. Halloway. “The man with the tattoos!” との説明で補足している。
no. 1096では、”Boy!” cried Will. “You must be the Tattooed Man!” “No.” Jim studied the stranger. “The Illustrated Man. There’s a difference.” とあり、異なるとある。Illustrated では、「物語り」が彫られているが、Tattooでは、単なる「画像や文字」を示す事か。
no.1107 では、For there stood Jim and there was this tall man, each examining the other as if he were a reflection in a shop window late at night. とある。存在を示す there is 構文は、初出をしめす名詞がくるのだが、ここでは this tall man とある。これは 「this tall man がそこにいた」という新情報を提示するからthere is 構文で用いられているのか。注意してみると、結構 there is the ＋名詞 という構文は多い。no.2329では、and there was the little girl, とある。文脈は、どこかで女の子の泣き声がする、どこだと少年たちが探していたら、幹のそばで、その子が見つかったという場面である。これも幹のそばが新情報なので、このような文が可能なのか？
no. 2348では、 She seized Jim’s hand.とある。no. 2557では、Will hit Jim’s arm. とある。これらは、She seized Jim by the hand. Will hit Jim on the arm. となるべきではないか。気づいた事は、Bradbury は、動詞＋人間＋前置詞＋the＋身体の一部という構文を使わない事である。
いろいろと語法で気づいた点を記した。本当はもっと記したい事があるのだが、そんなことばかり気にしていたら、本を読む事が進まないので、これからは内容に没頭して読んでいきたい。
