ポーの詩の中で Alone という詩に興味を持った。この詩は多くの人を引きつけるようで、いろいろなブログでたくさんの人々が感想を述べていた。下にその詩を記す。
Alone By Edgar Allan Poe
From childhood’s hour I have not been
As others were; I have not seen
As others saw; I could not bring
My passions from a common spring.
From the same source I have not taken
My sorrow; I could not awaken
My heart to joy at the same tone;
And all I loved, I loved alone.
Then- in my childhood, in the dawn
Of a most stormy life- was drawn
From every depth of good and ill
The mystery which binds me still:
From the torrent, or the fountain,
From the red cliff of the mountain,
From the sun that round me rolled
In its autumn tint of gold,
From the lightning in the sky
As it passed me flying by,
From the thunder and the storm,
And the cloud that took the form
(When the rest of Heaven was blue)
Of a demon in my view.
私は話し言葉と書き言葉のつながりに関心があるので、詩を見る時はいつでも韻を踏むところに注目をする。この詩 Alone はきちんと脚韻が踏まれている。それで、どのような読まれ方をするか、YouTubeでいくつか聞いてみた。１行目の終わりの I have not been でいったん区切るのかと思ったら、そんなことはなくて、朗読者はみんな、すぐさま次の行へよどみなく読み続けている。であるから、脚韻をはっきりと意識するというより、朗読している1,2分間の間に、同じような発音があるなと、かすかに意識するだけである。脚韻を対比して並べる上記のような詩の書き方はむしろ書き言葉としての詩を意識するためにあるのだろうか。
あるいは、朗読のスタイルで、脚韻を強調するために、各行の終わりでポーズをとって、行の終わりの音を意識させる方法もあるのではと思うが、このあたり専門家はどう言うのかな。
