相変わらず、The Puppet Masters を読んでいる。次のような文がある。(no. 1623) But she did it— because she is a hero, which you miss by a couple of points.” これは、Maryについて述べた文である。注目すべきは、… she is a hero. という文である。女性が hero (?) なぜと一瞬思ってしまった。女性ならば、heroine と思っていたが、そうではないようだ。
辞書を引くと、hero は男女両方に使われるが、特に女性を強調したいときは、heroine となるようだ。他に、小説の女主人公の意味で使われる。であるから、heroine には二つの意味があり、勇敢という意味と、女主人公の意味である。前者の意味の時は、女性にも hero を使ってもいいようだ。
(no. 1623) “Listen, son— most women are damn fools and children. But they’ve got more range than we’ve got. The brave ones are braver, the good ones are better and the vile ones are viler, for that matter. What I’m trying to tell you is: this one is more of a man than you are and you’ve done her a serious wrong.”
これは主人公のボスが言った言葉だ。most women are damn fools and children. という表現だが、小説の主人公に語らせるとしても、現代はこのような言い方はタブーとなるだろう。gender の観点からも、60年ほど前と現代では時代の違いを感じる。
